BLAT Sandwich
A.K.A the BLTA. A.K.A the Cali BLT. Take one of the world's most beloved sandwiches and add some avocado. My dad has to call it the BLAT to get a groan out of my sister; and like any good dad joke, pun, saying, etc. will, the "BLAT" always does.
Equipment
- Normal Kitchen Utensils
Ingredients
- 8 Slices Bread Texas Toast, Sourdough or Classic White
- 12-16 Oz. Bacon Sliced
- 7-8 Leaves Lettuce Iceberg or Romaine
- 1 Small Avocado
- 1 Large Tomato
- 1/4-1/2 C Mayonnaise or Brown Mustard
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Pepper (Optional)
- Salt and Pepper to Taste
Instructions
- Cook your bacon, either in a frying pan on the stove (about 5 minutes each side on medium-high heat, flipping once), or on a lined baking sheet in the oven (20 minutes at 400 degrees).12-16 Oz. Bacon
- While the bacon fries, slice your tomato as thin as possible and tear the lettuce into manageable pieces.7-8 Leaves Lettuce, 1 Large Tomato
- Slice the avocado in half, lengthwise, and carefully remove the seed. Holding one of the halves inside up in your hand, carefully run a knife down the length of the avocado, cutting the insides into 1/8-1/4 inch slices. Be sure not to cut through the rind. Repeat this process with the second half and then use a large spoon to scoop the slices away from the rind.1 Small Avocado
- Toast your bread to your liking. If you can, try toasting the bread in pairs, with two pieces stacked together. Doing this leaves each piece with a toasty side and a soft side.8 Slices Bread
- To assemble the sandwich, stack in this order: a slice of bread, a slathering of mayo, a quarter of the lettuce, a few tomato slices, salt and pepper to taste, a quarter of the cooked bacon, a few slices of the avocado, a sprinkle of the (optional) lemon pepper, another slathering of mayo, and a second slice of bread.1/4-1/2 C Mayonnaise or Brown Mustard, Salt and Pepper to Taste, 1 Tbsp Lemon Pepper
- Enjoy immediately with chips, a pickle and all your other favorite sandwich sides.
Notes
As when making a great BLT, you should note a few things for a great BLAT:
- Make sure not to overcook the bacon. Crispy bacon crumbles on a sandwich.
- Use a type of bread that bites easily and isn’t too thick. Because of all the tomato, mayo and avocado, if you have to bite down hard on the bread, you risk squeezing the insides out of the sandwich.
- Make sure you use a quality tomato. It makes a huge difference.
- Season your veggies. A little salt will make the tomato’s flavor pop. Likewise, lemon pepper and avocado are exceptional together. If you have salt in your lemon pepper, be careful how much normal salt you add (consider using lemon pepper on its own, without additional salt and pepper).
