Walking Tacos

Tacos meet nachos meet no plates or bowls to wash. Try these tacos in a bag for camp nights, yard parties or when you're feeling lazy and craving tacos.

  • Two 9-10 Oz. Bags of Tortilla or Corn Chips Or Four 4-5 Oz. Bags, Any Flavor
  • 8 Oz. Cooked Taco Meat Beef, Pork or Chicken (Roughly 1-1.5 C)
  • 1 C Cheddar or Monterrey Jack Grated
  • 1 Medium Tomato Diced
  • 2 C Shredded Lettuce About 4 Handfuls
  • 1/2 C Sour Cream or Crema
  • 1/2 C Salsa

Instructions

  • To assemble your walking tacos, open each chip bag, being careful not to tear them down the sides.
Two 9-10 Oz. Bags of Tortilla or Corn Chips
  • Remove or eat a handful or two of the chips in order to clear some space in the bag.
  • Add even amounts of the taco meat, cheese, tomato, lettuce, sour cream and salsa to each bag of chips.
8 Oz. Cooked Taco Meat, 1 C Cheddar or Monterrey Jack, 1 Medium Tomato, 2 C Shredded Lettuce, 1/2 C Salsa, 1/2 C Sour Cream or Crema
  • Mix everything together in the bag with a spoon or fork. Don't be afraid to crush the chips while you mix. Doing so actually makes it easier to eat the walking tacos.
If you want to really mix things up, hold each bag closed with your hands and shake it.
  • Either cut off the top of each bag or roll it down for easier access to the chips. This keep your hands from hitting the sides of the bag when you reach in.
  • Enjoy immediately. Eat your "taco" like nachos or with a spoon/fork.

Notes

This recipe is for a pretty basic walking taco, so feel free to spice it up with some sliced jalapeños, olives, onion, pico de gallo or anything else you want. You can also use a similar technique with corn chips, chili, cheese, onion and sour cream to make frito pie in a bag.
A 9-10 oz. bag of chips makes a pretty big meal. So, if you like to share, aim for two people per 9-10 oz. bag. If you like some privacy with your food, opt for a 4-5 oz. bag per person.
Don’t use 1 oz. bags, though. They are way too small.
