Garden Fresh Ranch Dressing
Equipment
- Normal Kitchen Utensils
Ingredients
- 3/4 C Sour Cream
- 3/4 C Mayonnaise
- 2 Tbsp Buttermilk or Regular Milk
- 1 Tbsp Shallot Grated or Finely Minced
- 1 Tbsp Fresh Dill Finely Chopped
- 1/2 Tbsp Fresh Parsley Finely Chopped
- 1/2 Tbsp Fresh Chives (or Substitute Scallions) Finely Chopped
- 1/2 Tbsp Lemon Juice Plus More to Taste
- 1 Large Clove Garlic Minced
- 1/8 tsp Ground Black Pepper
- 1/4 tsp Salt Plus More to Taste
Instructions
- Mix all the ingredients together and chill for at least two hours. If you can manage it, I like to chill the dressing overnight. The more time the merrier to help the flavors meld together, and to take some of the bite out of the garlic and onion.3/4 C Sour Cream, 3/4 C Mayonnaise, 2 Tbsp Buttermilk, 1 Tbsp Shallot, 1 Tbsp Fresh Dill, 1/2 Tbsp Fresh Parsley, 1/2 Tbsp Fresh Chives (or Substitute Scallions), 1/2 Tbsp Lemon Juice, 1 Large Clove Garlic, 1/8 tsp Ground Black Pepper, 1/4 tsp Salt
- Once chilled, give the ranch a good stir and taste for seasoning. If the flavor seems lacking, add a heavy pinch of salt. If it doesn't have a slight zing, add another squeeze of lemon juice.
- Enjoy!

Garden Fresh Ranch Dressing: Super Fresh Flavor!
There’s nothing quite like fresh, homemade ranch dressing. This Garden Fresh Ranch Dressing packs vibrant flavor with a combination of fresh herbs and tangy buttermilk. It’s the perfect all-purpose ranch: creamy enough to dip veggies and chicken tenders, but light enough to drizzle over your favorite salad.
This dressing is made with real ingredients like mayonnaise, sour cream, buttermilk, lemon juice, and fresh shallot, chives, parsley, garlic, and dill. It’s a super fresh counterpart to my classic homemade ranch recipe, giving you that restaurant-style “cool ranch” flavor. Pro tip: If you want a thicker, dip-style ranch, just swap the buttermilk for extra sour cream or mayo. Want it thinner? Add a splash of buttermilk or milk!
Ranch dressing has its roots in the 1950s when Steve Henson, a plumber turned cowboy, created the recipe while working on a ranch in Alaska. He and his wife brought the recipe to their ranch in California, and soon, it became a hit with guests. They eventually packaged the dressing, and it spread across the U.S., becoming the beloved flavor we know today. You may have heard of their ranch, or the valley it hides in.
A Perfect Partner to Fried Cheese Curds!
This Garden Fresh Ranch is especially good with fried cheese curds. The cool, creamy dressing balances the crispy, savory curds for a snack that’s pure comfort food bliss. It’s also fantastic with salads or as a dip for fresh garden veggies.
If you’re more into that “bottled” ranch flavor, simply swap out half of the sour cream for more mayo. This will give it that familiar, shelf-stable taste many of us grew up on. Either way, this recipe gives you total control over the consistency and flavor, so you can tailor it to your liking.
Whether you’re whipping up a quick snack or making a homemade ranch dip for a party, this Garden Fresh Ranch is sure to impress with its bold, herbaceous flavor and creamy texture. Fresh, simple, and versatile – it’s ranch dressing at its best!
