Notes
Why You’ll Love These Horseradish Mashed Potatoes
These Horseradish Mashed Potatoes are what happens when classic mashed potatoes marry a good horseradish sauce. You get the best of both worlds in one bowl.
At first glance, they look like regular mashed potatoes. Creamy, buttery, fluffy, and comforting. Then that horseradish hits you with this unforgettable little zip that completely changes the game.
Not overpowering. Not harsh. Just enough warmth and tang to make you immediately go back for another bite.
That balance is exactly why I love this recipe so much.
The sour cream plays a huge role here because it leans into that tangy horseradish flavor. It gives the potatoes a little extra depth while keeping everything smooth and creamy. Then the cream or half n half comes in and makes the whole thing feel richer, softer, and honestly a little luxurious.
If you’re in a pinch, you can absolutely swap in extra sour cream instead of cream. The potatoes still turn out delicious and creamy with plenty of flavor.
The Perfect Horseradish Balance
This recipe gives a range of 2 to 4 tablespoons of prepared horseradish, but for me, 3 tablespoons is the sweet spot.
Right down the middle.
It gives you that classic steakhouse flavor without completely overpowering the potatoes themselves. You know the horseradish is there, but the dish still tastes like mashed potatoes.
That’s important.
Too much horseradish can completely take over a side dish. This version keeps everything balanced and comforting while still bringing a little personality to the table.
Yukon Gold potatoes make these especially creamy and buttery, while Russets give you a fluffier texture. Both work great here, and mixing them together honestly makes some incredible mashed potatoes.
Tips For The Creamiest Mashed Potatoes
One little trick that makes a big difference is letting the potatoes steam dry after boiling. That extra minute or two cooks off excess moisture and helps the potatoes stay thick, fluffy, and rich instead of watery. Less water is more flavor.
And don’t skip adding the butter first before the dairy. That simple step helps create a smoother texture and keeps the potatoes from turning gluey.
If you want to take these even further, roasted garlic adds a great layer of flavor here. Fresh chives or parsley on top also make them look extra good on the table with almost no effort. I personally don’t add cheese to these, but I can see white cheddar or parmesan working well. And don’t forget the drizzle of melted butter.
What To Serve With Horseradish Mashed Potatoes
These potatoes go anywhere regular mashed potatoes would normally show up. They’re amazing next to roast beef, pork chops, smoked sausage, or meatloaf.
But where they really shine is alongside a good steak and some burgundy mushrooms. That combination feels straight out of a steakhouse dinner.
Still, my personal favorite pairing is Mississippi pot roast. The tanginess of the roast and the zip of those creamy horseradish potatoes is absolutely unreal together.
If you’re putting together a comfort food dinner or planning a holiday spread, these potatoes deserve a spot on the table. And if you’re looking for more cozy dinner recipes, make sure to check out some of the other comfort food favorites on All The Munchies.
