Notes

For a lighter dip, increase sour cream to 1/3–1/2 C.
Add Dijon mustard or lemon zest for extra flavor.
If you want a milder red onion taste, try pickled red onions.
Food Safety Note:
This recipe uses cold smoked salmon (lox), which is not cooked. It’s generally safe for most people, but not recommended for those who are pregnant, immunocompromised, or sensitive to raw or cured fish. If needed, you can substitute hot smoked salmon for a fully cooked option.

There’s something about a classic bagel with lox that just hits every time. Creamy, salty, fresh, and a little tangy. This smoked salmon dip takes all of that goodness and turns it into a scoopable, party-ready appetizer.

Even better? You don’t need to fuss with assembling individual bagels. Just grab a bowl, mix a few ingredients, and you’ve got a dip that disappears fast.

I love serving this with bagel chips because it feels like a deconstructed bagel with lox. Same flavor, way easier, and perfect for sharing.

Why This Smoked Salmon Dip Works

This recipe keeps things simple but balanced. The cream cheese gives you that rich, classic base. Sour cream lightens it just enough so it’s easy to scoop.

Fresh lemon juice adds brightness. Dill brings that signature herby flavor you expect with lox. Then you’ve got green onions and a little garlic to round everything out.

The smoked salmon is the star here. It adds saltiness and depth without needing much else.

Let it chill before serving. That step matters. The flavors blend together and the texture tightens up just right.

Flavor and Texture

This dip is creamy but not heavy. It spreads easily but still holds its shape on a chip. You’ll get a mix of silky cream cheese, soft bites of salmon, and little pops of onion and herbs. The lemon keeps it fresh, not rich.

If you add capers, expect a briny kick. If you include red onion, you’ll get a sharper bite. Every scoop tastes like a loaded bagel in dip form.

Easy Ways to Customize It

You can tweak this smoked salmon dip based on how you like to serve it. Want it thicker, more like a spread? Skip the sour cream and add a little mayo. It’ll feel closer to a bagel topping. Need a lighter party dip? Add more sour cream until it’s extra scoopable. If you like bold flavors, throw in Dijon mustard, lemon zest, and capers. That combo really wakes it up. Prefer it mild? Skip the raw onion and stick with chives. Add a bit more sour cream to mellow everything out.

How to Serve It

Bagel chips are my go-to. It’s the easiest way to get that full bagel-and-lox experience in one bite.

But this dip works with plenty of options:
Crackers
Toast points
Cucumber slices
Everything-seasoned pita chips

It fits just as well on a brunch table as it does at a party spread.

And if you need some other dips, try out this cool creamy garlic dill pickle dip. Or this hot buffalo chicken dip.
