Equipment

  • Normal Kitchen Utensils

Ingredients

  • 10-12 Oz. Canned Tuna (In Water)
  • 1 Stalk Celery Including any leaves if they look good
  • 1/4 C Mayonnaise Plus more to taste
  • 2 Tbsp Minced Onion Red, white or yellow
  • 1 Tbsp Minced Pickle or Relish (Sweet or sour)
  • 1/4 tsp Salt Plus more to taste
  • 2 Pinches Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 Squeeze Lemon (Optional)

Instructions

  • Dice the celery into 1/8-1/4 inch cubes. If the leaves look good, consider mincing them and adding them to the dish. They add a great celery flavor.
    1 Stalk Celery
  • Open and drain the tuna. Break the tuna into small piece with a fork. The smaller the better.
    10-12 Oz. Canned Tuna
  • Mix all of the ingredients together in a bowl.
1/4 C Mayonnaise, 2 Tbsp Minced Onion, 1 Tbsp Minced Pickle or Relish, 1/4 tsp Salt, 2 Pinches Ground Black Pepper, 1 Squeeze Lemon
  • You can serve the mix (salad) right away, but I like to let it chill in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes to marry the flavors. 30 is preferred.
  • Serve with salad, on crackers or in a sandwich.

The History of a Culinary Classic

Tuna salad made its debut in the early 20th century when culinary innovation embraced convenience. Although the precise moment of its creation remains somewhat elusive, the first American reference to Tuna Salad appears to be in 1907. The rise of canned tuna played a pivotal role in bringing tuna salad to life. It revolutionized the preservation of this oceanic fish.

As the 20th century unfolded, tuna salad gained momentum, securing its place as a beloved classic. Its simplicity and adaptability made it a go-to option for those seeking quick and satisfying meals, winning the hearts and palates of many. And that isn’t even accounting for the caloric richness this dish offers. I mean come on. If you can sneak that much mayo into a “salad”, you can’t lose.

The mid-20th century witnessed a surge in the popularity of tuna salad, coinciding with the shifting demands of modern lifestyles. Its versatility and ability to offer a nutritious and hassle-free choice earned it widespread recognition. Tuna’s lean protein content and beneficial omega-3 fatty acids further contributed to its allure. This solidified its position as a culinary superstar.

A Culinary Jack of All Trades

Today, this classic dish remains an enduring favorite, standing the test of time. With countless variations and adaptations, it satisfies cravings in sandwiches, wraps, and salads, offering endless culinary exploration. Embracing fresh produce, aromatic herbs, and tantalizing flavors, this “salad” caters to ever-evolving dietary trends and personal preferences, making it an everlasting crowd-pleaser.

If you like this tuna salad recipe, be sure to try it in one of its most classic applications – between two slices of white bread. You can even kick it up a notch by making a Tuna Melt – or one of my favorite concoctions, a TBT Melt. The options are endless, and extremely delicious!
